Some workshops stay with me long after the brushes are washed. Our Mirror & Pearl art workshop at Moshi in JLT was one of them. We held it on 29 August for Emirati Women’s Day, and it became a little celebration of women and their strength. Here’s a look back at the afternoon and what it meant to me.

The idea: seeing your own reflection

When I planned this session, I kept thinking about women and how much we give to the world, often without stopping to see it ourselves. A mirror felt like the perfect canvas for that. You paint around it, and when you’re done, the first thing you see in the middle of your art is you.

So the theme was simple: women, seeing their own reflection, and remembering how much they contribute. Creating art was our way of expressing it. 🤍

Pink flowers and pearls

Each frame started with a soft pink base. On top of that we painted flowers, tulips with long green leaves, some in pink and some in white. Then came the pearls, set one by one around the round mirror like a little crown.

I love this design for beginners. The flowers are made of easy, curved strokes, so there’s no “wrong” line to worry about. And the pearls at the end are the fun part, because that’s when the frame suddenly looks finished and everyone sits back and says “wait… I made THIS?!” 🥹

Here’s roughly how a mirror like this comes together:

  1. The base. A smooth pink layer over the whole frame, kept clear of the glass.
  2. The leaves. Long, curved green strokes rising up from the bottom.
  3. The flowers. Tulip heads on top of the leaves, in pink or white, with a little shading to give them shape.
  4. The pearls. Last of all, a ring of pearls around the mirror. This is the moment it comes alive.

Smiles in the mirror

My favourite moment was seeing each woman’s smile in the mirror. After all the painting, everyone held up their frame and looked into it, and there it was: their own reflection, surrounded by flowers they had painted with their own hands.

Everyone painted the same design, yet no two mirrors looked alike. Each one carried its own colours and its own style, just like the woman who made it. Everyone took their own mirror home.

No pressure. No perfection. Just pause, create & enjoy. ✨
